Which Underwater Camera Housing ?

I think there are more camera housings than anyone can guess! for so many years independent Companies have been manufacturing small quantities of underwater housings for specific cameras and then vanishing without trace. Or more importantly without any spares to back you up when things start going wrong!.

So with that in mind I would always advise sticking to the tried and trusted housings used by professionals and serious amateurs alike, assuming you have a supplier in your country.

The next question to ask is plastic (acrylic/Lexan) or aluminium. Plastic underwater camera housings in general are slightly more bulky, but are rarely attacked by salt water (the fittings however are!) many plastic camera housings are translucent which gives you immediate visual awareness of water ingress or flood.

Aluminium camera housings offer far greater strength and are usually rated to a greater depth (finding things to photograph is the difficult part). They tend to be more expensive and are often more compact compared to plastic housings. These housings are usually well lacquered and only chipping will allow salt water to corrode the parts cleaning cannot reach. Many housings have a built in leak monitors.

Most housings require ports dedicated to a specific type or size of lens, some are also available with focus or zoom controls, many housings will already be equipped with a focus control, but some lenses are too wide and will not allow coupling gears enough room to reach the focus barrel, manual focus is often essential in poor ambient lighting or situations when auto focus is restrictive.
